Gr 5-8-The legendary Annie Oakley is demystified in this appreciative biography. Beginning with her subject's poor childhood, Flynn covers the sharpshooter's life, her attempts to keep her family fed by shooting wild game, the abuse she suffered in a foster home, her romance and marriage, and her public appearances. The indomitable, independent spirit that shaped this woman's life and made her an inspiration to others comes through clearly. With sensitivity, the author relates the facts as well as some of the stories that have created the legend. The book has a good index and interesting black-and-white archival photographs.-Marilyn Fairbanks, East Junior High School, Brockton, MA (c) Copyright 2010. Adequately written biographies trace the lives and accomplishments of three notable American figures. Strengths as well as weaknesses are related, with personal flaws and foibles presented in proper journalistic fashion, with little editorializing. The books are illustrated with black-and-white photographs and reproductions, and the final chapter of each discusses the historical legacy of the subject. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010.
