Kirkus评论
A teacher joins with a first-time illustrator to present brief biographies of African American pioneers. The profiles include Estevan, Du Sable, and Beckwourth together with less familiar figures: George Washington Bush, Clara Brown, Biddy Mason, Mifflin Gibbs, Mary Fields, Bill Pickett. For each, introductory paragraphs delineate one important episode, followed by a summary of the main events in the subject's life. Despite attempts to enliven her narrative with invented dialogue, Pelz's style is fiat, choppy, and pedantic. A worthy effort marred by the inability of either writer or illustrator to bring the heroes to life. Bibliography, with most titles from the 60's and 70's. Gr. 3-5. Nine short biographical essays feature dramatic episodes in the lives of five men and four women who left their marks on the history of the Old West. The African-American heroes included range from Estevan, an early explorer, to Stagecoach Mary Fields, an adventurous pioneer notorious for her strong will and physical strength. A full-page black-and-white portrait opens each chapter in an attractively designed book that makes this hard-to-find information accessible to young readers.
