摘要
This fascinating series explores the experiences of specific groups in American history -- focusing on daily life, work, and traditions. Full-color illustrations give readers a realistic and close-up look at early American homes, clothing styles, equipment, and landscapes. Excerpts from letters, journals, and biographies -- as well as recipes, songs, and sayings -- augment the text.

Gr 3-6-A book that is similar to Bobbie Kalman's "Early America" series (Crabtree), but one that is easier to read and more concise. Each double-page chapter consists of a few short paragraphs of text, an information box, and a full-color illustration that often covers 3/4 of the spread. Quotes from pioneers' diaries and verses from songs add a personalized touch. Old-time remedies, games, and recipes are appended. The hardships, as well as the good times, are presented in an informative and entertaining manner. A good supplement to American history units.-Norma Hunter, Fair Grove Elementary/Middle School Library, MO (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Liberally quoting excerpts from personal letters and newspapers of the nineteenth century, these books offer clear, succinct descriptions of frontier settlers: the prairie farmer and the cattle rancher. Colorful illustrations portray various aspects of the way these pioneers lived, ate, and worked. 'Trail' and 'Farm Kitchen' recipes are included. Glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. In the American Pastfinder series, a portrait of life on a midwestern farm during the Great Migration in the first part of the 19th century. Each spread contains a couple of paragraphs on a specific topic: ``The Great Migration,'' ``Sodbusting,'' ``Building a Home,'' ``Clothing,'' ``Home Remedies,'' ``Sodbuster Celebrations,'' ``A Day on the Farm: Morning,'' and so on. The background for each discussion is a large, detailed watercolor scene of the farm (pale greens and browns predominate); in some cases, the pictures are labeled, becoming diagrams. In addition, each text is supplemented by a quote from a document from the era: letter, newspaper, almanac, or lines from a poem. The whole is highly informative and vital, engaging simply by virtue of the variety of information that it presents. A nice piece of work. (glossary, index) (Nonfiction. 9-12)
