Gr 6-9During the 19th century, over half a million men, women, and children migrated westward to gold fields, farms, adventures, and new lives. Among these was Martin Gay, a farmer from Springfield, MO, who, in 1851, took his family on a five-month trek to the Willamette Valley of Oregon. But this account is not just the tale of one family; rather, it is a fine blending of the problems, adventures, and trials of all westward pioneers, wonderfully illustrated with period reproductions and a few black-and-white photographs. The book is based on Martha Gay Masterson's One Woman's West (South Butte, 1989), which was written for adults.George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield (c) Copyright 2010. A well-researched, detailed look at the westward journey many families undertook in the 1800s is told from the children's point of view. The solid text includes excerpts from diaries and letters, and one of the chapters explores the effects of westward expansion on Native Americans. Black-and-white archival photographs and drawings illustrate this readable and thorough account. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Gr. 4^-7. Using personal accounts of women and children who moved in wagon trains across the country to Oregon and California, Stefoff creates a vivid, detailed impression of the difficulties young pioneers faced. She covers the trek thoroughly--from scrambling for provisions, sad leave-takings, and the grueling journey across rivers and mountains to making a new, usually difficult beginning. She also clears up common misconceptions (emigrants did not travel in Conestoga wagons) and gives a fair assessment of the relationship between the travelers and the American Indians they met. The book design is reminiscent of series nonfiction, but the engaging, readable text is a cut above. Illustrations are plentiful, and a bibliography is appended. --Susan Dove Lempke
