Gr 3-6-Brief, accessible chapters combined with mostly sharp, clear photographs and reproductions make these titles good introductions to their subjects. In Native Americans, "frontier" refers to the Great Plains, and Sundling focuses on basic topics such as the tepee, the horse, religion (especially the Sun Dance), the buffalo, and the farming habits of the less nomadic tribes. While most of this material is available elsewhere, the book's presentation and reading level position it as an attractive choice for readers ready to go beyond the "New True" series (Children's). Mountain Men offers less readily available material, including an excellent introduction to the beaver trade that motivated many of the mountain men in the early days. Short biographies of notable figures such as Jim Bridger are included, as is a mention of John Colter's part in the Lewis and Clark expedition. These titles will be helpful to young researchers.-Coop Renner, Moreno Elementary School, El Paso, TX (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Six thin volumes give sketchy descriptions of general history and the daily life of different classes of settlers on the American frontier. The information offered is slight, the organization scattershot, and the ample illustrations are a hodgepodge of period photographs and paintings, maps, and color photographs of actors dressed in period clothing working at reenactments.
