Gr 4-6-- The cover sketch, in lurid color, of a train holdup is sure to attract readers' attention. However, over half of the brief text is given to illustrations, and the large type and wide leading further limit the content of this minimalist, easy-reading account of the life and career of the infamous outlaw. The authors transcribe accepted facts and do not moralize. --George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield (c) Copyright 2010. Easy-to-read, sketchy texts relate the exploits of famous Westerners. Although the authors claim these stories are all derived from 'first-hand reports,' too many of the events seem to be based on rumor and speculation. The tone of the books is often admiring - even when the subject is a notorious criminal. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Gr. 4-8. Was Jesse James an outlaw or a hero? According to Green and Sanford, he was both--an outlaw who made his living from robbing banks and trains and killing anyone who got in his way and a hero to poverty-stricken Confederate sympathizers who hated the rich and powerful. In this first volume in the high-interest, easy-to-read Outlaws and Lawmen of the Wild West series, the authors attempt to portray the authentic as well as the legendary Jesse James. Their efforts to simplify history and legend have uneven results. Young readers will easily be convinced that James was an outlaw; however, they'll have more difficulty understanding how his exploits made him a hero. Many of the black-and-white illustrations are drawings that show the James Gang in action. The few photographs are the best feature of the brief biography. Especially intriguing is the one of an elderly Frank James, Jesse's brother and fellow outlaw, selling tours of the James farm for 50 cents. A short reading list is appended; no documentation. ~--Karen Hutt
