Gr 4-7These series imports devote double-page spreads to 11 "facts," each of which is accompanied by several illustrations, diagrams, and explanatory comments. American Frontier presents a jumble of information often without orientation dates. Statements include: "No part of a buffalo was wasted," "Some Native Americans joined the US Army," and "Farmers starved if the crops failed." Vikings has a simpler text but also has no discernible organization. "A Viking's family was loyal," "Vikings' life was harsh," and "Vikings were law-abiding citizens" are a few of the concepts covered. Both books provide some fun browsing, but numerous other titles present the same material and do a more thorough job.George Gleason, Department of English, Southwest Missouri State University, Springfield (c) Copyright 2010. Scattered facts about the American West, including the native peoples' way of life; the arrival of pioneers by covered wagon; and information on frontier farming, architecture, and commerce are included in the brief text, which is accompanied by detailed color illustrations. The volume contains some intriguing bits of information, but the content is rather thin and the presentation is busy. Glos., ind. From HORN BOOK 1997, (c) Copyright 2010.
