Gr 8 Up-- A gripping, well-written account of Captain Alfred Dreyfus, who was falsely arrested and convicted of spying, and the resulting scandal that affected all of France in the last years of the 19th century. Finkelstein's treatment--the only one on this topic for teens--is readable and thorough. The book falls short only in its concluding summary, which is superficial and incomplete. Nevertheless, it will provide excellent support material for French and European history classes, and for teens studying anti-Semitism. It can also be promoted as an exciting and true tale of espionage. --Ann W. Moore, formerly at Lane Road Library, Columbus, OH (c) Copyright 2010. Recounting a complex story that divided the turn-of-the-century populace, biographer Finkelstein ( Theodor Herzl ) relieves the density by placing the reader at the scene whenever possible. The subtitle is apt, because the story did not just concern a single individual (even Dreyfus was not fully aware of the larger implications of his case) but had local and global repercussions--horrifyingly shrill anti-Semitism presaging the Holocaust, the significance of monarchy in French culture even after the Revolution, the importance of religion in government at that time and the development of Zionism in response. The twisting of facts by military and government factions because of ``blind passion, subverted justice, and shameless bigotry'' has contemporary parallels in ``my army/country, right or wrong'' sentiments. In spite of alarming proceedings, readers who persevere will be reassured to learn that justice was eventually achieved. Ages 11-up. (Nov.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved

Phot. Finkelstein's careful reconstruction of the infamous espionage case lodged against Alfred Dreyfus is a gripping story. Photographs of Dreyfus at various points in his life add poignancy, and selected documents and political cartoons, a time line, lists of key figures, and a bibliography round out the capably narrated account. The cause célèbre that dominated turn-of-the-century French politics; the author argues plausibly that the virulent anti- Semitism exhibited, then presaged the Holocaust. Dreyfus, an ardent patriot since being exiled from his native Alsace after the Franco-Prussian War, was an officer in training in 1894 when it was discovered that military secrets were being passed to the Germans. Seizing him on the flimsiest of evidence, confirmed in the popular mind because he was Jewish, the army court-martialed Dreyfus in secret, illegal proceedings and sentenced him to life on Devil's Island. The effort to reverse this injustice pitted the ``Dreyfusards,'' including such intellectuals as Zola and other left-wing figures, against rabid nationalism and the extensive coverup perpetrated by the army, allied with conservatives and clergy. In 1899, Dreyfus was convicted in a second trumped-up court-martial, then pardoned- -partly because of international indignation; not until 1906 was he fully exonerated. Though the complexity of the detail here may daunt students without a firm grounding in history, Finkelstein (The Other 1492, 1989) sets the myriad facts and players in admirably coherent order and makes clear their significance in the volatile French politics of the period and as an ominous portent of things to come. A significant, sobering piece of the past, well worth pondering today. Well illustrated with b&w photos, cartoons, etc. A timeline and lists of personalities help keep things straight; bibliography; index. (Nonfiction. 12+)

Gr. 7-12. The persecution of Alfred Dreyfus--the French-Jewish army officer who was falsely accused of treason in 1894, tried in secret, and brutally imprisoned for years--still speaks to us today with its elements of racism and government cover-up. This account focuses on the suspense and drama of the trials and court martials, sets the affair against the widespread anti-Semitism of the time, and brings in the painstaking attempts by Dreyfus' supporters (including the great French writer Zola) to get out the truth. Most moving are the excerpts from Dreyfus' prison diaries and letters. Finkelstein makes no attempt to glorify Dreyfus, showing rather that he was an ordinary officer and family man, fiercely loyal to his army and country, with little understanding of the wider issues of his case. The general lack of documentation is frustrating (for example, where did Hannah Arendt say that the Dreyfus affair was a rehearsal for Hitler?), but the book's design is spacious, with useful time lines, lists of main personalities, and many illustrations to come, including prints, photographs, and political cartoons. Today's young people will be caught by the history and the personal tragedy, while they recognize the foreshadowing of the Holocaust and the danger of lies that threaten democracy in the name of patriotism. ~--Hazel Rochman
