PreS-K-A clever concept book. Each double-page spread features rabbit friends in two different scenes, each one presenting an opposing situation whether it be trying out a bicycle ("Too big/Too small") or playground equipment (Too high/Too low) or roller-skating ("Too fast/Too slow"). Each of the spreads is followed by a picture of the perfect solution or compromise. The minimal, repetitive text will have listeners joining in and will offer beginning readers an opportunity to try their new skills. Bright and cheery digital pen-and-ink and watercolor pictures depict a male and female rabbit. (He's yellow and sports a bow tie, she's pink and carries a purse.) A small mouse also appears in each illustration, often providing a humorous touch. Like this friendly creature and the two rabbits, listeners will learn about opposites, and more importantly, about what friends do to make things "just right."-Karen Scott, Valley Intermediate School, Pelham, AL (c) Copyright 2010. Opposites may attract, but they also prove to be humorous obstacles for a bunny couple and their mouse friend. When Bynum's (Altoona Baboona) winsome watercolor-and-ink drawings show the pair out dancing, for instance, the male bunny discovers that his mouse pal makes "too short" a partner, while the female bunny struggles with a "too tall" giraffe. In another spread, the bow tie-clad bunny goes entirely "too fast" on his roller skates to suit his sidekick, who nearly loses her purse and pearls, while he thinks her attempt to skate gingerly alongside a guardrail is "too slow." But each of Minters's (Cinder-Elly) comical encounters does resolve happily: the rabbits discover what is "just right" just by being together, whether it's swinging on the dance floor or skating away in an embrace, their diminutive buddy in tow. A rabbit couple demonstrates opposites while enjoying various activities together, including buying a bike (Too big / Too small / Just right) and skating (Too fast / Too slow / Just right). Pleasant illustrations expand on the minimal rhyming text. Bynum definitely relies on tradition to show which rabbit is the girl; she's pink, with a necklace, a handbag, and a coy smile. A jaunty pair of bunnies embarks on an adventure exploring opposites. Like Goldilocks, the curious duo samples things that are at each extreme before discovering a happy medium. Minters's ( Sleepless Beauty , 1996, etc.) spare text is composed of contrasting word pairs that cover familiar concepts for the very young: high/low, fast/slow, etc. The brief statements are woven together into simple rhymes, creating a singsong rhythm that is eminently suitable for read-aloud sessions. "Too dark / Too bright / Just right / Too heavy / Too light / Just right." Bynum's sparkling watercolors clearly convey the concepts expressed, featuring scenarios that toddler's can readily recognize; e.g., a trio of slidesone towering, one squat, and one bunny-heightilluminate the difference between high and low. The antonym pairs are accompanied by an individual illustration for each word and followed by a full-bleed, two-page spread depicting the duo engaged in activity that is "just right." The comical drawings of the nattily attired rabbit couplehe in a snazzy bow tie and she in pearlsand the addition of a small, purple mouse companion add to the whimsical charm of the illustrations. Not too long and not too complicated, this cheerful little picture book is just right. (Picture book. 2-5)

Ages 3^-6. There are lots of books of opposites, but this one is particularly nice. It incorporates plenty of examples and funny illustrations that make the point so easily kids won't know there's also some learning going on. "Too big" shows a boy and girl bunny looking up at a huge bicycle; "Too small" has the boy biking on a tiny two-wheeler; "Just right" features the duo pushing off on a bicycle built for two. "Too dark" is three pair of eyes on a black page; and "Two bright" shows the boy bunny shining a flashlight on the girl rabbit and a mouse friend. The camping trip is "just right" when the flap of their tent is opened to let in the starshine. Easter-egg colors enliven the clever pictures. A fun place to start a discussion of opposites. --Ilene Cooper
