《儿童读物杂志》(Horn Book)书评
In an evenhanded way, this book explores the opposing views on the meaning of the Second Amendment and whether the government should regulate private citizens' access to firearms. Photographs and colorful charts are of average quality. Though well written, the book is not easy to read. Bib., glos., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. Gr. 6-9. Gun control is a hot debate topic, and Aitkens explains why it will continue to be so. She reviews an interesting portion of American history--the need for early settlers to bear arms--and explains the Second Amendment to the Constitution, which seems to justify the tradition of owning guns for personal use. The power and the position of the National Rifle Association and its critics are presented fairly. Examples supporting the status quo as well as the call for restrictions abound. Issues of recreation, safety, violence, legality, and freedom come together as well-balanced information. Illustrations could have been fewer and more powerful. The appendix includes an opinion survey, glossary, and bibliographical references. Teachers of social studies will want this book in the school library because of its unbiased range of information. ~--Gary Young
