Twenty-seven aviators here relate combat experiences. Starting with WW I and ending with Vietnam, Foss, himself a WW II hero and ex-governor of South Dakota, and Vietnam veteran Brennan ( Headhunters ), base the book on personal interviews, published autobiographies and articles. Unusual are the reminiscences of 94-year-old Capt. Arthur Brooks, who flew Curtiss ``Jennys'' and Spads in 1917 and 1918, but the bulk of the volume is devoted to WW II aces, including several winners of the congressional Medal of Honor. Most tell of their victories, but a few relate adventures after being shot down in German- or Japanese-held territory. The no-win war in Korea still rankles the veterans interviewed for the book, and the single entry by a Vietnam navy pilot shows how badly prepared were our airmen for that conflict. A stirring work. This volume offers oral history accounts by 27 American aces from four wars. Well-known figures are represented here, including coauthor Foss himself, Tom Blackburn, Hub Zemke, and Robert L. Scott. There are also accounts by Arthur Raymond Brooks, one of the last surviving World War I aces, Medal of Honor winner William Shomo, and several Korean War figures known best to specialists. The aces speak for themselves and clearly enough so that the book will be absorbing reading for aviation buffs of any sort. Recommended for most larger collections. ~--Roland Green

Oral history of what it was like flying fighters in World Wars I and II, Korea, and Vietnam, with the voices of 27 pilots whose individual combats got them five victories or more each. Their descriptions of air-to-air combat are sometimes told in thoughtful and measured language, but more often with remembered excitement and fear coloring the words they use. Intended primarily for an audience with war and flying as focus, these stories recall the times in which they occurred, with unexpectedly vivid details. Foss (winner of the Congressional Medal of Honor for action in the Pacific during World War II) and Brennan (helicopter pilot in Vietnam) add a page each of introduction, but the stage belongs to the aces themselves. Informative, thought-provoking, and often compelling reading.-- Mel D. Lane, Sacra mento, Cal. (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
