摘要
Begins with Cather's (1873-1947) own statements on the narrative unity of her 60 short stories, to trace the progression of her aesthetic and metaphysical preoccupations, and her contribution to the early American modernist movement. (c) by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.

YA-- An authoritative study that also includes some of Cather's own comments about her writing. Divided into three segments entitled ``The Short Fiction,'' ``The Writer,'' and ``The Critics,'' this collection of articles offers varied perceptions of Cather's little-noticed work. The first section analyzes such stories as ``Paul's Case'' and ``The Garden Lodge,'' discussing the author's sense of irony. YAs eager to learn the writer's craft will find the middle section practical as they struggle to establish a persona. Students will appreciate Cather's views on the short story and its differences from the novel. Teachers will welcome the comprehensive consideration of the often underplayed efforts of this most American of authors.-- Margaret D. Nolan, W. T. 《书目》(Booklist)书评
Not unpredictably, the short stories that eminent U.S. writer Willa Cather produced are overshadowed not only in readers' minds but also in critics' estimation by her justly famous novels. In a format typical of Twayne's Studies in Short Fiction series, Wasserman presents a compact, accessible overview of Cather's short fiction certain to stir interest in these no less artless segments of her oeuvre. The first section of the book investigates thematic and stylistic characteristics of her stories; that's followed by a selection of interviews with Cather on the subject of writing; and section three offers a group of outstanding critical essays on her work. All in all, a keen stimulus for achieving a fuller acceptance and appreciation of Cather's immense talent. Chronology, selected bibliography; to be indexed. ~--Brad Hooper

Wasserman clearly states her purpose in the preface: to enable a general reader to explore Cather's accomplishments in the short story. The three parts dealing with the short fiction, the writer, and the critics present a variety of approaches to selected Cather short stories such as "The Enchanted Bluff," "Before Breakfast," and "Uncle Valentine." Some are paired and placed under headings of the collection or under "Four Love Stories." The section on Cather the writer includes comments of others that support the statement in the introduction, "Fastidious selectivity, reticence, control--these principles governed both her life and her art." The section on the critics includes five essays, each on a different story, written by John J. Murphy, Joan Wylie Hall, Alice Hall Petry, Marilyn Arnold, and Susan J. Rosowski. The selected bibliography and index will be useful for any student of Cather. Undergraduates and general readers would be most likely to use this book. -D. Ritter, Midland Lutheran College
