Gr 6-9These Italian imports are designed as introductory explorations of ``...all aspects of evolution.'' Earth gives an overview of the planet, including its formation over five billion years ago; its structure; the geologic formation of the continents; the composition and changing characteristics of the atmosphere, oceans, mountains, volcanoes, geysers, glaciers, deserts, rivers, and lakes; and related weather and climate features. Animals covers the origin of life and the evolution of animals, from protists to mammals. Humans covers the evolution of humans, from the early hominids to Homo sapiens. The extensive use (two-thirds of each double-page spread) of photographs; maps; and full-color, museum-quality drawings and paintings, all of which are fully labeled and captioned, extends the texts. The inclusion of the same three charts in each volume``Evolution of the Universe''; ``Evolution of the Moneran, Protist, Plant, and Fungi Kingdoms''; and ``Evolution of the Protist and Animal Kingdom''has a unifying effect. The books' format will attract browsers; their contents will be useful to those seeking basic information for reports.Carolyn Angus, The Claremont Graduate School, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Gr. 4-8. The Beginnings--Origins and Evolution series, translated from the Italian, consists of six books presenting scientific theories about "beginnings" from the Big Bang to the emergence of Homo sapiens. Both Animals and Life begin with the emergence of bacteria and the development of microorganisms into more complex forms of life. Animals proceeds with the emergence of invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. Life, however, offers a closer look at DNA, the structures of plant and animal cells, the evolution of species, and the five kingdoms of life on Earth. Good design and excellent illustrations--including diagrams, charts, paintings, and photographs reproduced in full color--make the books inviting sources of information. The texts, however, are relatively short and sometimes more difficult to read than one would expect in books so heavily illustrated. At times, more explanation would be welcome. Still, the diagrams--of cells, for instance--are much clearer and more detailed than in most books. A series valuable mainly for visual content. Check the Series Roundup, April 15 issue, for volumes on humans, plants, the earth, and the universe. --Carolyn Phelan
