In an attempt to define and identify characteristics of competition in the early 21st century, Rosen (sociology, Moravian College) provides background information about the healthier characteristics of the competitive spirit--he looks particularly to the Cold War era--and strong evidence of the demise of that healthy spirit. Despite the fact that sport brings people together, Rosen argues, contemporary competitive sports may further divide people because of issues of violence, poor sportsmanship, hyper competitiveness, poor role models, and doping allegations. Even youth sport is now taking on this stigma, having been penetrated by hypercompetitive adults supporting a culture that encourages such behavior. The countercultural legacies of race and sexuality further define and influence modern-day competition. This well-written book provides a wealth of information that will whet the reader's interest in further research and study. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates and above. M. E.
