摘要
摘要
This work gives authoritative coverage on 300 current popular and best-known novelists, playwrights, poets, short story and non-fiction writers. It includes Piers Anthony, Dave Barry, Stephen King, Danielle Steele, and Ken Follett. Each entry provides personal information about the author, a bibliography of works, a list of works about the author, and a critical essay. Four indexes - nationality, genre, title and author's surname, help the reader search.

Gr 7 UpApproximately 300 contemporary fiction and nonfiction authors, both popular and literary, are profiled. Alphabetically arranged, the brief entries begin with biographical data, followed by a bibliography of the subject's publications, divided by type. Written in an easy style, they provide readers with a sense of a writer's genre and appeal. A short signed critical essay that discusses the author's works completes each entry. Appendixes feature indexes by nationality, genre/subject, and title, as well as notes on contributors. This is by no means a major source of information about authors; its usefulness lies in the wide variety of writers discussed in one volume, making this a handy ready-reference tool for identification. The complete listing of works through 1995 is useful, especially for those seeking more titles by a favorite author.Dana McDougald, Cedar Shoals High School, Athens, GA (c) Copyright 2010. The first edition of a sourcebook on almost 300 authors, living and deceased, represents the most popular writers in both fiction and nonfiction drawn almost exclusively from the US and the British Commonwealth. Entries conform to St. James's standardized format: a brief biography, a full list of publications, a signed critical essay, and with the more "literary" authors, a brief bibliography of critical studies. Short, factual profiles of the advisers and contributors appear at the end of the volume. Especially useful are the three indexes, two of which categorize the writers by nationality and by the primary genres in which they wrote, and the third, which lists the titles of all the major works included in the "Publications" sections of the entries. The list of entrants covered in the book ranges from hugely popular writers such as Barbara Cartland to more literary yet popular writers such as Kurt Vonnegut. The critical essays, in general, are good, providing an overview of the writer's body of work with cogent analysis of its larger themes. Recommended for high school or public libraries that lack access to such titles as Contemporary Authors (1962- ), but not for academic libraries that would be likely to have other titles that cover these writers. This work contains roughly 300 profiles of "authors, both living and dead, who were active in the early 1960s or later and remain popular in the mid-1990s." Coverage heavily favors Americansas typified by Maya Angelou, Tom Clancy, James Dickey, Carl Hiassen, Joyce Carol Oates, Oliver Sacks, and John Updikebut some foreign writers, mostly British and Canadian, are also represented. Each entry offers a thumbnail bio, lists of the author's publications and major critical studies, and a brief signed essay exploring the oeuvre. The volume concludes with three indexes (nationality, genre, and title) and notes on the 65 advisers and contributors, most of whom are academics. The profiles in this work are quite similar in style and format to those found in Gale's well-known "Contemporary Authors" series, and every author covered here also appears in that series. Because of this overlap, libraries that have the latter can safely pass on this work. On the other hand, small public and school libraries that cannot afford the "Contemporary Authors" series will find this a useful acquisition.Ken Kister, author of "Kister's Best Encyclopedias," Tampa, Fla.
