《书目》(Booklist)书评
This book from NCTE is another impressive addition to its Booklist series. It annotates approximately 400 books published between 1990 and 1992 for children in grades K-8 about African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans/Latinos, and Native Americans. Some books set in countries other than the U.S. are also included. The chapters are arranged according to specific themes rather than cultural or racial groups. The nonfiction topics include "The Arts," "Ceremonies and Celebrations," "History: The Way We Were," and "People to Know and Places to Go." In some instances, a fiction book is included in a theme section: for example, "Ceremonies and Celebrations" lists An Island Christmas. The fiction listings are divided into four sections by age, from the very young to older readers. The book concludes with a chapter listing anthologies and "A Potpourri of Resources," a list of print materials and organizations to assist the teacher in furthering the study of the diversity of American society. Each entry notes author, title, illustrator, and age level ascertained by the publisher or assigned by the reviewers. Annotations summarize the story or content, refer to the illustrations, and mention honors or awards. References to related books, books by the same author, and books on similar subjects are also noted. Following the annotations are indexes of award-winning books, a directory of publishers, and indexes of authors, illustrators, subjects, and titles. The subject index gives access by racial or ethnic group. Kaleidoscope, although already two years out of date, is an affordable resource for the classroom teacher, parent, or librarian for recent books about other cultures. It will update Our Family, Our Friends, Our World: An Annotated Guide to Significant Multicultural Books for Children and Teenagers [RBB My 1 92], which lists more than 1,000 books published between 1970 and 1990. This Land Is Our Land [RBB Ja 15 95] annotates 570 multicultural books published between 1985 and 1993 for grades K-12 but doesn't include nonfiction. (Reviewed Mar. 1, 1995)

This title is a new addition to both the NCTE Bibliography Series (1990- ) and to the growing body of multicultural literature. As with other books in the series, titles were compiled by teachers and librarians, and the editors (in this case Bishop, children's literature, Ohio State Univ.) maintain high critical standards. Kaleidoscope has approximately 370 annotated listings related to African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic/Latino Americans, and Native Americans, all published in 1990, 1991, and 1992. Each entry includes bibliographic information and suggested age levels. Nonfiction is divided by topic, fiction by age level. In addition to the expected author, title, illustrator, subject, and publisher indexes, there is an index of teaching resources. Photos of jackets for selected titles are used to illustrate the book. Lyn Miller-Lachmann's Our Family, Our Friends, Our World (1992), with 1,000 entries, provides broader geographic coverage, a wider age range, and includes books published from 1970 to 1990. Alethea Helbig's This Land Is Our Land (CH, Apr'95) has 570 entries for books of fiction, poetry, and oral tradition published from 1985 to the end of 1993 for preschool through high school. There is little duplication of titles between Kaleidoscope and these two references. This useful, reasonably priced work should be in all academic and public libraries. Recommended for all levels. T.
