This is an anthology of Gothic literature, set within the context of contemporary criticism and readers' responses. It includes selections from the major practitioners - including Horace Walpole, William Beckford, Ann Radcliffe, Matthew Gregory Lewis, Coleridge, William Godwin, Mary Shelley, Charles Robert Maturin and Edgar Allan Poe -and many of their followers as well as contemporary reviews, private letters and diaries, chapbooks, and contemporary anecdotes about dramatic performances and the design of theatre sets.

Ideally, an anthology should furnish materials useful for the topic concerned, in the present case, a rationale for selections, good texts of those selections, and accurate explanatory notes. Norton's book promises more than it delivers in all categories. As regards texts, though he makes available some oft-cited, but seldom convenient, material--e.g., prefaces, reviews, pertinent commentaries--he provides only snippets of the gothic narratives themselves when the entire work would have been more useful (consider, for example, The Fall of the House of Usher). Furthermore, Norton diverges from his promised use of first editions in the case of Poe, using as textual authority the 1853 volume of Poe's poems for "Annabel Lee." Other lapses include the confusion of Thomas Moore and John Moore and the misleading implication that parodies of gothic works spanned from 1796 to the 1820s, when they ran throughout the 19th century. Last, Norton includes no American gothic plays, nor does he include in the bibliography titles that study them. Not recommended for undergraduate collections. B. F. Fisher; University of Mississippi
