Gr 3-6-Snail Mail No More (Scholastic, 2000) continues the story of Tara*Starr and Elizabeth, best friends in P.S. Longer Letter Later (July 1999, p. 54). The girls were separated as the result of a move at the beginning of the seventh grade. The story is told through the girls' e-mail correspondence. The lives of Tara*Starr and Elizabeth are as different as their personalities, and they deal with problems in contrasting manners. Flashy, outgoing Tara must deal with the birth of a new sister as well as typical teen problems such as drinking and driving. Quiet, conservative Elizabeth must cope with her absent father's drinking, his death, and her feelings about him. The story deals realistically with death and grieving. Their friendship is supportive, and faces the obstacles of distance, new friends, and teen emotions. Elizabeth's poetry enriches the story, as it reflects her feelings. Co-authors Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin wrote this story as actual e-mail messages between them. Their reading is clear and effective, and by tone of voice and inflection are able to reflect some of the visuals in the book. Students will identify with the two teenagers and the struggles of friendship.-Ann Elders, Mark Twain Elementary School, Federal Way, WA (c) Copyright 2010.
