Gr 1-6-Explaining grief and death to children can be a difficult task, but author/illustrator Trevor Romain makes it a little easier to understand. He uses a combination of animation and live action to tell the story of Skye, a young girl whose grandmother has just died. Filled with grief and confusion, Skye falls asleep and dreams that her grandmother has come to visit her. With the aid of Trevor, her grandmother helps Skye understand what happens when people die and the things that she can do during this painful time. The various religious beliefs concerning what happens to the body and spirit when someone dies are briefly touched on, including the difference between burial and cremation and a description of what a funeral may be like. The importance of talking to someone about your feelings is emphasized. Viewers are also given suggestions for keeping active and told how to make a memory box, a place to put all of those things that are special and remind you of the loved one who has died. The story doesn't only focus on humans, but acknowledges the love and deep feeling of loss that one might have when a pet dies. The gentle tone makes this a must-have for all collections serving children.-Veronica Schwartz, Des Plaines Public Library, IL (c) Copyright 2010.
