This volume is ambitious in scope, tightly written, and a good introduction to the thinkers represented. The contributing writers provide brief essays on what the editors deem to be the most "influential lives" in education since John Dewey. They also offer valuable perspectives on the thinkers' major concepts and theories (particularly their seminal influences), a list of their main writings, and sources for further reading. For the most part, the editors include theorists and practitioners who are widely acclaimed in the field of education, from Michael Apple to Lev Vygotsky. Yet this reviewer would quibble with their inclusion of some thinkers, however powerful, who were not primarily educators (Jurgen Habermas, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Francois Lyotard, Michael Oakeshott, Simone Weil, and Ludwig Wittgenstein) and whose influences were largely derivative in education. Recommended for graduate, research, and professional collections in education. J. L. DeVitis University of Louisville
