Ages 14-adult. The New Madrid earthquake zone, buried beneath the Mississippi River, stretches from Marked Tree, Arkansas, to Cairo, Illinois. In 1811 and 1812 quakes more powerful than the 1906 earthquake that leveled San Francisco split the earth, rerouted the Mississippi River, and destroyed a small Missouri town called New Madrid. Although geologic activity has been constant but slight since then, scientists interviewed in this low-key production predict a devastating earthquake in that area before 2040--one that will cause massive damage in nearby cities such as Memphis and St. Louis, which have been built without reinforced structures. Using computer graphics and maps, a soft-spoken narrator explains the geologic origins of earthquakes, cites the difficulties of predicting action along the New Madrid Fault, and calmly alerts viewers to a hidden threat. ~--Candace Smith
