Earthquakes are very scary so this one-of-a-kind book not only explains to children what causes them, but also shows how to prepare, keep safe, and, importantly, work through fearful feelings.
"Givon's message is one of optimism, keeping the disaster in perspective. The playful illustrations help create a tone that is ultimately reassuring -- an approach that will be appreciated by shaky parents and kids alike". -- Kirkus Reviews
"Keep We Shake in a Quake on hand along with flashlights and canned food....Genuinely reassuring". -- Los Angeles Times

PreS-Gr 2Rhyming verse and cartoon illustrations introduce young readers to earthquakes. A young boy narrates, telling about the earthquake he was in, how he and his family responded, and what he learned about quakes afterwards. The verse is awkward at times, and the singsong rhythm can be distracting: "I quickly jumped down to the floor/Squeezed underneath my bed/ Away from windows that could break,/ With my hands behind my head." Still, within this framework the author manages to point out several aspects of earthquakes. There are basic safety tips, a list of supplies, an extremely simplified geologic explanation, and some discussion of the varied emotions involved during and after a quake. The illustrations convey some wildness but none of the terror, and exaggerate with mild, but obvious humor. They stop short of the pure silliness that might trivialize a serious subject and complement the emphasis on feelings in the text. There are several excellent factual books on earthquakes, but they are for slightly older readers and tend to focus on science more than feelings. Some children will find the format unappealing; but for others this will be just right as a gentle introduction to a frightening subject.Steven Engelfried, West Linn Public Library, OR (c) Copyright 2010. Told entirely in rhyme from the point of view of a young earthquake survivor, this book offers advice on earthquake preparedness and how to cope emotionally but glosses over actual facts about why earthquakes happen. The information may calm fears, but the forced rhyme and cartoonlike art are uninspired and greatly reduce the book's effectiveness. A before-and-after earthquake checklist is included. Glos. Givon and Uttal's first book is an attempt to help children cope with the emotional aftershocks of an earthquake, without adding to their fears. Readers experience an earthquake through the eyes of a young boy, whose thoughts and feelings are conveyed in a somewhat clumsy rhyming verse. Givon's message is one of optimism, keeping the disaster in perspective. When the family surveys the damage, including broken flower pots, the father says, ``Not important''--because no one in the family was hurt. The text provides departure points for explaining what causes earthquakes and how to prepare for the next one (safety tips and a checklist are included). The playful illustrations help create a tone that is ultimately reassuring--an approach that will be appreciated by shaky parents and kids alike. (glossary) (Picture book. 4-8)
