Gr 5-9-A clear, succinct account of the disaster that stresses the ways in which city officials, the fire department, and the military attempted to deal with it. The controversial, and probably illegal, intervention of the military, the firefighters' lack of an adequate water supply, and the unsuccessful use of dynamite by inadequately trained personnel are among the topics presented. Quotations from eyewitnesses and black-and-white photographs of the city in ruins appear throughout. The final chapter discusses the ways in which the city failed to use the lessons of 1906 to prepare for future incidents. A two-page chronology of the earthquake and resulting fires; a page of facts and listings of famous fires; and a bibliography of books, magazines, and Web sites, as well as a good index, add to the usefulness of this volume for reports and for general readers.-Ginny Gustin, Sonoma County Library System, Santa Rosa, CA (c) Copyright 2010. The disasters fully described in each volume are recounted in terms of their historical importance as well as their significance in changing future laws and legislation, scientific methodology, and cultural attitudes. The prose sometimes becomes anecdotal ([cf2]Blizzard[cf1]) or redundant, but the books do a competent job of presenting each event; adequate black-and-white photos accompany the texts. Time lines are included. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.
