《学校图书馆杂志》(School Library Journal)书评
Gr 4-6 A visually appealing overview of human anatomy, this would best serve as an introductory book. After a brief discussion of the various rhythms of the body, individual chapters are devoted to individual parts and functions of the body. Chapters range from four to ten pages in length, with large full-color illustrations comprising at least one-half of the space. These include diagrams of the system, followed by close-up looks at one or more components. The text is informative but very brief, covering only enough material to provide a basic understanding of the body's workings but not going into much detail. For example, in the chapter on the muscular system, Elting tells what the various muscles do, but nothing of how they do it. In comparison, the chapter on the digestive system follows a portion of food from the mouth to intestine, with good description along the way. In all, the writing is clear, sometimes simple, and factual, with some background on studies and research included to add interest. Several of the chapters close with an insert which lists a few miscellaneous facts on the topic, such as, ``Your smallest bone is in your ear. Your largest bone is in your thigh.'' A short glossary, which sometimes supplies incorrect pronunciations, is appended, as is a good index. While this will not supplant the more informative works on the body, like Mitchell Wilson's The Human Body (Golden, 1959; o.p.) or Your Wonderful Body (National Geographic Society, 1982), the illustrations make it worth considering as an additional purchase. Gr. 4-6. This is strictly an overview, but it does introduce readers to the wonders of the body. Large pages are filled with simply but clearly executed color pictures and numerous charts. Each system of the body (digestive, immune, muscular, reproductive) is described in a chapter several pages long, and framed boxes feature unusual facts such as ``Your smallest bone is in your ear; your largest bone is in your thigh.'' This volume offers information for those doing reports, and the brightly colored graphics allow enough close-up views of organs and bones to inform. Glossary appended.
