On September 8, 1998, six minutes after its last communication, Swissair Flight 111 bound for New York plunged into the ocean, killing all 229 people on board. This DVD tells the story of the 41/2-year, $39 million investigation into the crash. The only clue investigators had to go on after the flight recorder was found ruined was the crew's last words, "There is smoke in the cockpit." Much of the airplane was reconstructed from the two million pieces of debris recovered from the ocean floor. Eventually, the disaster was linked to flames from cracked wires that ignited insulation above the cockpit, filling the cockpit with fire and fumes. It is horrifying to realize that these same elements exist in most modern jets: cracked wiring and supposedly flame-proof insulation and electrical parts. Twenty-three recommendations made by the Canadian transportation authorities are still not being implemented by our FAA. This excellent documentary and expos? is highly recommended for all audiences.-Michael Schau, Seminole Community Coll. Lib., Sanford, FL (c) Copyright 2010.
