Dirk Bogarde turns in a wonderfully nuanced performance as a bisexual barrister out to thwart a group of blackmailers targeting gay men-even though it means sacrificing his promising career and perhaps his marriage as well. Well conceived as a thriller, in addition to a social drama, Basil Dearden's pioneering effort was one of the first British films to deal frankly with its oft-censored subject matter.
