The premise of this book is that "electronic shopping will radically rewrite the rules of competition in retailing," changing not only the way people shop, but the roles of manufacturers, wholesalers, and retailers within the distribution chain. The authors--all consultants and strategists in the area of e-commerce--note that, just as Columbus and other 15th-century explorers altered the trading practices of their day, so are the Internet entrepreneurs of today changing the current retail landscape. Whereas before customers had to accept a trade-off--paying high prices to get high-quality service--now, by shopping online, they can pay less for more. These "e-tailers," as the authors refer to online retailers, have the ability to offer high-value goods and services at a low price, providing customers with quick and convenient access to personalized and customized services at the click of a mouse. In addition, the e-tailer gains valuable customer data with every transaction, allowing businesses to better meet customers' needs and gain repeat business.
