Two new releases from Berkley Prime Crime paperbacks are full of useful information for both mystery fans and readers' advisors. Killer Books is a wide-ranging guide to the multifaceted world of mystery and suspense fiction. A sequel of sorts to the editors' By a Woman's Hand (1994), which examined crime novels by women, this volume breaks the entire genre down into various subgenres or categories. Just what is and isn't a subgenre is a source of constant debate among mystery readers, and while Swanson and James' categories will also be challenged by some, they prove useful tools. Each chapter addresses a kind of crime novel, organized either by plot content (historical mysteries, caper novels, psychological mysteries) or by type of hero (cops, private eyes, amateur sleuths). Within each category, from 15 to 30 authors--some from the past but mainly contemporaries--are discussed, their series described, and their heroes profiled. Various indexes, including a fine geographical one, aid access. An excellent source for tracking down read-alikes within a subgenre. In Speaking of Murder, veteran authors, editors, and anthologists Gorman and Greenberg bring together 21 interviews with A-list mystery/suspense authors. The subjects range from Mickey Spillane and Ed McBain through Simon Brett and Peter Lovesey to Sue Grafton and Patricia Cornwell. Their reflections on their work are uniformly interesting, and the biographical details will fascinate fans. Though sometimes a few years old (the "new" book being discussed is often two or three in the past), these interviews--many originally published in the mystery press--combine browsability with reference value. --Bill Ott
