The guiding principles that served as the impetus for the first edition of Dental Public Health: Contemporary Practice for the Dental Hygienist remain consistent. The twenty-first century mandates a change in the practice and understanding of dental public health principles. Dental hygienists increasingly are becoming important players in the dental public health arena. In fact, the changes in supervisory status affecting many states will have an unprecedented effect on the practice of dental public health. Moreover, dental hygiene's ability to react proactively to these changes can have a tremendous effect on dental public health within the United States. Additionally, other countries may benefit from dental hygiene's growth within the United States. The dental hygiene practitioners who will be practicing in this new century need information on how to effectively position and practice dental hygiene in the dental public health setting. Dental Public Health: Contemporary Practice for the Dental Hygienist introduces the student to definitions and discussion on dental public health. Appropriately, the historical development of the profession of dental hygiene, focusing on its inception as a true public health profession, is presented. The prevention modalities encompassing public health dental hygiene are discussed, including fluoridation, dental sealants, fluoride mouthrinse programs, tobacco cessation programs, athletic mouthguards, nutritional counseling, dental screenings, dental health promotion and education activities, and other dental health interventions. The current status of dental public health delivery in the United States and abroad is discussed, with emphasis on the governmental structures affecting dental hygiene care delivery. Emphasis is placed on the profession's collaboration and partnership with a variety of health care professionals outside of the private dental practice delivery system. Dental health care personnel issues are discussed, focusing on the shortage and surplus controversies affecting the professions of dental hygiene and dentistry. In addition, factors affecting dental care delivery are presented in detail. Financing dental care has been added to this edition. Private and governmental programs that fund dental care are discussed in detail. In addition, a detailed overview of the different types of insurance programs in the United States is presented. Lesson plan development, presentation strategies, and techniques are discussed with guided examples and case studies to aid in student comprehension. Target populations are expanded in this edition, focusing on groups for which dental hygienists frequently provide dental health presentations. Additionally, issues of cultural diversity are reviewed. Program planning and evaluation, utilizing the dental hygiene process of care, are discussed. The topic of program evaluation and the use of dental indices are expanded in this edition. The oral epidemiology of dental diseases is introduced in this edition. Defined discussions on the current epidemiology of specific dental diseases are presented. Dental hygiene research methodologies are expanded, focusing on the aAddition of more biostatistical concepts. In addition, easy-to-read tables with explanations on a multitude of research approaches and study designs are included. Case studies of individual research studies and program evaluations aid student understanding. Data analysis makes use of helpful practice problems to increase student understanding. Easy-to-read information on how to effectively evaluate scientific literature and dental products is expanded in this edition. Strategies on creating dental hygiene positions remain in this edition; moreover, a chapter on existing careers in dental public health is added to enhance the student's understanding of available career opportunities. Dental hygiene students will be exposed to the "real life" experiences of dental hygienists working in public health settings, including boxed scenarios of the dental hygienist's responsibilities and unique experiences in these settings. A chapter dealing with "how to create" dental hygiene positions in these areas is also presented. This section offers example proposals and helpful strategies to utilize when working to establish a dental hygiene position within a health care organization. A review of dental public health geared toward assisting the student in preparing for the community health section on national boards will remain in the book with the addition of more testlets and a thorough explanation of the correct answers to the questions presented. A glossary of terms is included. An enhanced website is available at www.prenhall.com/nathe .
