摘要
Cahiers du Cinéma was the single most influential project in the history of film. Founded in 1951, its visionary contributorsâe"including the likes of Godard, Truffaut, Rivette, and Rohmerâe"would revolutionize filmmaking and writing. In this authoritative history, Emilie Bickerton explores the evolution and impact of Cahiers du Cinéma, from its early years, to its late-sixties radicalization, its internationalization, and eventual decline. A Short History of Cahiers du Cinéma is a testimony to the extraordinary legacy and archive it has provided for the world of cinema today.

With a son at the University of Michigan and six daughters at home, the Mexican-American Hernandez family of Pharr, Texas, struggles along on an income well below the poverty line. During the months Wolf spends with them (visiting theft schools, a bowling alley, relatives in Mexico), one of the girls graduates from high school, she and an older sister get college scholarships, and the parents with five of their daughters drive to Wisconsin to work on a sugar beet farm for the summer. As they are paid by the acre, all spend an exhausting ten hours a day in the fields; but disappointment comes with the news that another family will be hired to speed up the weeding because of unstable weather. Thus, after only four weeks the family packs for home, with a net gain of under $2,500. ""It will be a difficult year"" but ""we will manage,"" the parents agree; they have already succeeded in seeing three children into college. Wolf's flatly descriptive photo-documentary is presented ""with profound admiration. . . for all those who struggle with dignity""; the struggles and the dignity of the Hernandez family could come as a revelation to youngsters who take for granted what others still toil for.
