This book presents a broad overview for training a student to be a dental assistant. The purpose is to give a student the basic knowledge for becoming a dental assistant. It is targeted at students with a high school education interested in the field of dental assisting. The book presents a wide variety of information a student would need to become a dental assistant, ranging from sterilization techniques to restorative procedures. The book covers a wide variety of essentials for a dental assistant student. I found the book confusing and frustrating. For some subjects, the authors had you bouncing from page to page for figures and tables. The exercises at the end of each chapter at times had questions on subjects not covered in that chapter. I also found some instructions in the book to be wrong; for instance, on page 136 it states that when retrieving an instrument from the dentist you use your last two fingers. If this were the case, you would drop the instrument. You only use your pinky to retrieve the instrument. I think a workbook is necessary to accompany any textbook written on the field of dental assisting. All in all, I found the book poorly written and I would not recommend it.
