This is a companion book to comprehensive emergency medical treatment manuals. It is designed to serve as a simple guide to specific dental emergencies, outlining the characteristics and required procedures for emergencies that dental practitioners can encounter. The editors state that this book is meant to be a simple reference guide for emergency medical treatment. It is not meant to replace comprehensive manuals for emergency procedures. This is important because an easy-to-use guide is necessary to identify, diagnose, and solve emergencies in the shortest time possible. This book gives a simple overview of many emergency situations and meets the editors' objective sufficiently. It is written for practitioners who seldom encounter dental emergencies. However, it should be used by practitioners who have sufficient training in emergency situations, as it is too simple for novice practitioners with little experience or training. Therefore, this book serves as a quick diagnostic t ool to support a practitioner's training in such circumstances. The editors, both faculty members of Temple University, are credible authorities in the subject. This is a survey of proper procedures for emergency situations, followed by an overview of many different emergency circumstances. A unique and useful section on legal implications and information for practitioners is also included.. The end of the text includes various information tables. The survey of various emergency situations is especially helpful. There were no real shortcomings. This book is helpful to practitioners who do not encounter dental emergencies often, but who have sufficient training to handle them. As the editors state, it is designed to be a simple companion to comprehensive books on emergency dental procedures. As such, it should be used as a simple tool for experienced dental practitioners to identify and solve emergency situations. Juneseok Lee, DDS(University of Chicago Medical Center).
