This third edition arrives 10 years after this last edition. The text covers the many areas of standard operative dentistry. The purpose is to educate dental students on operative dentistry. In many areas the book shows a how-to approach. Such objectives are necessary for students beginning their studies in dentistry. Operative texts are a must for any dental education. Personally, I believe there are many quality chapters. However I believe today's dentistry is quite different than that covered in the last edition, and as such, I believe the author falls short of his objective. This book is strictly for dental students. The author is qualified in his pursuits of such traditional operative dentistry. The textbook has many quality illustrations and diagrams though no references, the index is excellent. This book truly appears as a textbook of a student's guide to operative dentistry . As its title states, this is a textbook of operative dentistry. Students will find a of wealth of info rmation in this book. but the real question remains, is this book current enough? I believe this book suffers from the same problem dental schools do and that is they're not changing with the times. To have such a small portion of the text dedicated to cosmetics is a major flaw. This book also discusses outdated methods in certain areas. Though I practice all phases of dentistry, the practice is quite different today than of 15 to 20 years ago. The author may state his objectives are of the most traditional and with this I agree, yet dentistry has made such great strides in the past 10 years, and I just don't see concomitant changes in this book.
