Early childhood education constantly changes in response to changes within society. An excellent introduction to the complexity of contemporary challenges confronting professionals working with young children, these articles by well-respected authorities in their fields represent a range of issues. Authors present their subjects in historical context. Topics range from the role of computer technology in early education, the inclusion of special education children in preschool programs, assessment, and international perspectives to more commonly discussed areas of working with families, valuing diversity, and the importance of play. The essay on the professional status of early childhood educators is a sobering analysis of the problems faced by children and teachers in societies that undervalue both women and young children. The articles provide useful information and differing perspectives. Although each voice is unique, the quality of the writing is consistently high. There are also points of convergence in the shared assumptions about developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood education. Emphasis is placed on the need to respect the individual within a social framework. Easy answers are not provided, but the questions will stimulate ongoing discussion and debate.
