Gr 4-6-- Commonplace and obscure facts about the ocean, earth, and atmosphere, and the animals that dwell there are presented in texts that explain natural phenomena clearly and simply for those with little background in natural science. However, only Armadillos seems focused; the organization of the others is disjointed and distracting. Lightning leaps from hurricanes to birds to shooting stars; acid rain and smog are considered ``wonders'' of the sky. With such a hodgepodge of material in one book, much of the impact is lost. The titles share the same format, with one page of text per topic, faced by a full-page watercolor illustration with adjoining caption. No glossary is included, but phonetic pronounciations are provided within the text. Illustrations do not lend excitement, credibility, or realism to the text, and colors are not true to nature's palette. Text and captions mention fantastic colors, but some accompanying illustrations show animals in murky browns and drab bluish-greens. A few maps are included, but they are primitive, with little attention to scale or accuracy. To be truly amazed, try National Geographic books or Joyce Pope's Do Animals Dream? (Viking, 1986). For individual topics, select books by Seymour Simon. --Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, Glen Rock, NJ (c) Copyright 2010.
