Gr 3-7 Ten true tales of unusual or unexplained mysteries are presented in this mediocre anthology. None of the stories is scary, particularly awe-inspiring, or well-crafted. Most will leave readers with a dissatisfied ``so what?'' feeling at the conclusion. Among the stories is ``The Strange Disappearance of Manuel Cortes,'' a man who hid in a wall in his own home for 30 years. Pelorus Jack was a psychic dolphin who guided ships through Shipwreck Pass off the coast of New Zealand in the early 1900s. Another story tells about an octopus who foiled shipwreck treasure hunters by killing divers, leaving eerie skeletons in the deep. In keeping the language simple, sensationalism has been downplayed, leaving these stories curiously flat. While fans of Guinness collections of facts will probably like it, it is missing the thrilling sense of wonder about what really happened. Even if these tales did motivate reluctant readers, no suggestions are given for what to read next or where to go to find more details. Black-and-white photographs are scattered throughout, but they add little insight or interest to the text. Leslie Chamberlin, Napa City-County Library, Calif. (c) Copyright 2010. Among these ten true tales of strange and puzzling happenings are those of a dolphin that guides ships through perilous waters, a pigeon that carries secret coded messages, lighthouse keepers who disappear, and buried treasure that is never recovered.
