Gr 4-7-- Conord provides a balanced portrayal of the actor/comedian, and places a special focus on how he has come to embody family values. On TV, Cosby always seems to have it together. No matter what the problem or how hard his television family may have tried to undermine him, he is able to resolve most issues with his personable nature, warm understanding, and humorous wit. In real life, he did not manage things so easily. This biography relates the personal and career hardships the subject had to face in establishing a name for himself. A stint in the Navy brought about a radical change in his attitude about education and himself. Comedy was at first something he just did to enhance his job as a bartender, but later he worked hard on a style and routine for his comedy acts and acting jobs. Black-and-white photographs adequately reinforce the text. Overall, a good introduction to the man who is perhaps television's best known father. --Jeanette Lambert, Nashville Metropolitan Schools, TN (c) Copyright 2010.
