More than any other single event, the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848 changed the American west. But the impact was felt far beyond the Golden State--Nevada, Alaska, Montana and other territories beckoned as silver and copper deposits were uncovered, and, in an era before the term ""global economy"" was thought of, the wealth created by the prospectors and miners shifted the economic balance of the world. Technology played a pivotal role in extracting these minerals and turning them into wealth. This video showcases the inventions that took mining from a one-man operation to a multi-billion dollar industry. Cables, elevators, pumps, ventilators and drills are just few of the tools that evolved as the search went further and further underground, and surviving examples, computer graphics and reenactments show how they worked.
