How many times have you heard this complaint? "If it weren't for all those meetings, I might actually get some work done!" Since this is a likely scenario in many libraries, author and library organizational development consultant Soete applies his specialized knowledge of librarianship to this important topic of how to better schedule, manage, and control meetings. Beginning with a too familiar litany of reasons why too many meetings go wrong, Soete organizes a very practical guide to meeting management that is directly related to the special field of libraries. Topics covered include a survey of fundamental concepts about meetings, a useful application of these principles to the field of librarianship, a questionnaire for assessing meeting effectiveness, and 12 actions that any library leader can take to improve necessary meetings. In addition, he provides practice exercises for staff to try and excellent meeting management tools that can be copied and used, including forms for agenda development, meeting evaluations, and ground rules for meetings. Of course, implementing these excellent ideas demands discipline and a lot of insights into group dynamics, topics also explained here. This is a nice supplement to Team Power: Making Library Meetings Work (ALA, 1993); both titles are highly recommended for all library leaders desiring to maximize the efficient use of staff time in meetings.DDale Farris, Groves, TX (c) Copyright 2010.
