In a sequel to The Hot & Cold Summer, the inimitable Bolivia once again sparks rivalry between best friends Row and Derek; the issues here are honesty and trust. During Christmas vacation, Bolivia arrives for another brief visit, bringing to a head a suspicion that Derek has harbored ever since Rory used slightly dishonest tactics to win a school contest. When Bolivia's Swiss army knife goes missing, Derek confides his doubt to Bolivia, who comes up with a plan to trap Rory--who appears to prove his dishonesty by falling for it. However, instead of confessing, he turns the accusations against Derek and Bolivia. Both the vacation and the friendship seem ruined, till a blizzard forces the three to face their lack of trust and try to discover the real truth. Although the three children haven't advanced in either maturity or depth since the previous title, and both the plot and the style are rather plodding and obvious, the satisfying resolution makes this a title Hurwitz fans will welcome. Gr. 4-6. Trust and friendship are the related themes Hurwitz explores in her story about a trio of kids whose relationships with each other are strained by the fear that one of them is a thief. Neighbors Derek and Rory are good friends with Bolivia, whom they have gotten to know from her visits to her great aunt and uncle. During Bolivia's Christmas holiday visit, her new Swiss army knife disappears, and Derek is sure Rory has taken it. His suspicions arise from knowledge of several incidents of dishonest behavior on Rory's part, and Derek eventually confides his fears to Bolivia. The two then leave Derek's bank open to tempt Rory, and when the money disappears it appears Rory is the culprit. Rory fights back at the accusation, however, and in defending himself causes a rift between Derek and Bolivia; now, none of the children are friends. Tensions ease when Derek's father casually discloses that he borrowed the money because he was short of cash; with Rory absolved in this particular incident, the children are able to discuss their differences and reaffirm the value of trust in a relationship. As for what really happened to Bolivia's knife, that's all settled in a wrap-up that isn't quite the surprise it should be. Despite the verisimilitude of the characters, the story isn't seamless; its exposition is weakened by plotting that feels too much like a set-up. Still, the drama of friends at odds with each other, and the mystery of who is behind the story's several disappearances will keep interest steady. Not Hurwitz at her best, but good enough to be read by her significant following. DMW.
