摘要
The nation's best-selling author, R. L. Stine, produces "safe, scary" horror books for young readers at the remarkable rate of two a month. This biography details his start, how he gets and develops ideas for his immensely popular Goosebumps and Fear Street series, and what humorous Stine is "really" like.

Gr 6 Up-With a wry sense of humor befitting the subject, Cohen introduces readers to this prolific writer. Beginning with his "normal, scary childhood," the author traces Stine's career through 1999. After a friend at Scholastic challenged Stine to write a horror book for teens, he complied and, having produced an immediate bestseller, he devised a formula for "clean, funny" horror that resulted in the "Fear Street" (Pocket), "Goosebumps" (Scholastic), and "Ghosts of Fear Street" series (Pocket). Stine is philosophical about his popularity cresting and plans to enjoy the ride as long as it lasts. His methods for churning out two new books a month, his involvement with the Goosebumps TV series, and his singular attempt at adult fiction are also discussed. The last chapter describes the censorship furor resulting from his work. Extensive chapter notes are followed by a helpful time line, a lengthy bibliography (primarily articles), and an inclusive index. Black-and-white photos add just the right touch of humor/horror to the lively text. Cohen's warm, tongue-in-cheek presentation is as colorful and crisp as Stine's own. If readers liked this author before, they'll love him after reading his biography. For librarians who worry about the Stine phenomenon, this book should quell some of their concern.-Mary R. Tracing the lives and careers of six notable figures, these admiring biographies are generally superficial in tone. The most recent events in the subjects' lives are sometimes given brief coverage but are not explored in any depth--making the books seem already dated. Murky black-and-white photographs of varying quality illustrate the texts. Time lines are included. Bib., ind. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
