《书目》(Booklist)书评
An anthropological study of what at one time were the most feared Indians of the Southwest. Though there have been many books about the Apache, this volume offers the first comprehensive view of the economy of the tribe from 1800 to 1950. Primary emphasis is placed on how the tribe operated before the onslaught of white American culture. The western Apache are portrayed as a helpful and caring people who lived off the land and considered religion a keystone of their society. Home life and daily activities are juxtaposed against a seemingly hostile environment, and the influence of the Apaches' neighbors and historical events are also evaluated. Rich in detail that should help modify the popular narrow concept of the Apache fostered by movies and novels, this is a solid addition to native American studies. Illustrated with photographs, line art, and maps. Notes; bibliography; to be indexed.
