Gr. 7-12. In nine interviews, nine children of migrant farm workers talk about the circumstances that are shaping their presents and futures. Connected by poems in both Spanish and English, the interviews distill the life stories of these children, who often work as migrant laborers themselves. A variety of ages and genders are represented, with each child speaking from a different perspective--from a third-grader who good-naturedly tells about picking strawberries in the fields, and two sisters who live apart from their mother in order to stay in school, to the teenage gang member who no longer has dreams for his future. A strong sense of family devotion infuses each interview, as does a constant reminder that education is the key to escaping the fields and helping other family members. Accessible and revealing, the oral histories will have an immediate and profound impact. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs, the book, which will fill both curriculum and current information needs, gives a voice to children who are rarely acknowledged and even more rarely heard. Further readings are appended. ~--Janice Del Negro
