Gr 4-6A collection of children's drawings and letters as well as quotes from rescue workers, volunteers, family members, and teachers who experienced the tragic bombing. The book's outward appearance suggests a young audience; however, the impact is too strong for most children to explore on their own. Reminiscent of I Never Saw Another Butterfly (Pantheon, 1993) and I Dream of Peace (HarperCollins, 1994), Ross's title is a dynamic blend of art and text that's sure to affect even those who feel safely removed from the incident. The drawings are bold and colorful, while the text touches on a variety of small events that were part of the larger tragedy. Introduction by Cathy Keating, First Lady of Oklahoma. Afterword by Robert Coles. Children's drawings and letters inspired by the 1995 bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City are accompanied by the written reminiscences and impressions of adult volunteer workers. The intended audience for the book is questionable; adults may compose the largest readership. Nevertheless, young readers may be intrigued by this look at a recent national tragedy and the compassion it evoked from other children. From HORN BOOK 1996, (c) Copyright 2010.
