Told to sit on a bench, not to move until her mother comes back, a tot might well find ten/fifteen/twenty minutes a hundred years--might even envision waiting till she's a curly-headed grandmother, surrounded by children and grandchildren, ""all. . . waiting and waiting."" And because the feeling is a genuine one, because some of the pictures register (some are too edged, too jokey), this will strike an emotional chord with many kids--though some might wonder at Amy's mother leaving her on the bench (while she goes into a supermarket??), and anyone might find Amy's last words, on her mother's return, more clever than credible. ""I got tired waiting, Mama,"" she admits, ""but I wasn't lonely."" (Remember husband and family.) A draw, then, between the bona fide and the out-of-whack.
