Pfeffer gives background information about the people and animals that inspired a dozen literary characters, including Mother Goose, Peter Rabbit, and Misty of Chincoteague. The biographical information and connections between character and subject are sometimes sketchy, but readers will take pleasure in learning more about their favorite fictional friends. Black-and-white photos accompany each essay. Bib. (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted.

Gr. 3^-6. Kids will enjoy this compact book that gives them the story-behind-the-story on some of their favorite characters. Pfeffer, best known for her fiction, introduces the topic by explaining that writers often draw on people they know as inspiration for their characters. In brief chapters, she introduces the Alice Liddle of Alice in Wonderland fame, the boys on whom Peter Pan's Lost Boys are based, Maude Hart Lovelace's "gang" from the Betsy-Tacy books, Christopher Robin Milne, and others. Pfeffer contrasts real and fictional lives and tells what happened to these "characters" when they grew up. The small, square format looks young, but the book is highly readable, and the well-reproduced photographs and illustrations add to its appeal. A welcome choice. Further reading suggestions are appended. --Ilene Cooper

Gr 4-6-A pleasant, informative look at the inspirations behind some famous characters from children's literature. Eleven authors' creations are discussed, starting with Lewis Carroll's Alice. Figures as diverse as Mother Goose and James Barrie's Peter Pan are presented. Readers will find the story behind Hans Christian Andersen's "Little Mermaid" heart wrenching. The real-life Christopher Robin's mother had wanted a daughter and dressed her only child like a girl. The illustrations of the child throughout the "Pooh" books portray him as he was dressed-longish hair and all. Drawings and photographs give the book an intimate, family photo-album feel. However, there is some unevenness. While A. A. Milne's characters are given two entire chapters, Michael Bond's "Paddington" is summed up on one double-page spread. The Betsy-Tacy characters are included, but Anne of Green Gables, Madeline, and Ramona Quimby are not. Still, this is a nifty compilation culled mostly from adult sources and made accessible to younger readers. Students will find it interesting and useful for reports.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI (c) Copyright 2010. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc.
