Gr 9 UpA discussion of those aspects of various cultures that cause children to be differentor alikeand of how cultural influences affect their personalities and behaviors. Broude examines, compares, and contrasts nearly 100 practices and beliefs related to pregnancy, childbirth, and child rearing among approximately 100 cultures and/or peoples from around the world. The topics, presented alphabetically in articles ranging from one to several pages, include adolescence, adoption, activities, cleanliness, social development, fathers and mothers, friendship, illness, initiation rites, language acquisition, learning, moral development, naming, peers, responsibility, sex differences, sibling rivalry, toilet training, weaning, and more. Written in a clear style, the articles discuss the topics not only in terms of cultural differences, but also in terms of similarities across cultures. Longer articles are divided into sections with bold headings for easier access to the information, and each article is followed by a bibliography. An extensive bibliography is provided at the end of the book, as is a comprehensive index. Black-and-white photographs appear throughout and culture-location maps at the beginning of the text are also included.Dana McDougald, Cedar Shoals High School, Athens, GA (c) Copyright 2010. Broude's compact encyclopedia provides insight into the influences of customs and economics on the growing-up process in various societies. All children have similarities, but child-rearing environments differ greatly across cultures, causing very different behaviors. For example, in some cultures achievement is stressed but in others it is deemphasized. Entries are alphabetically arranged and well documented, and some have helpful see also references. Subject and culture group indexes provide varied ways to find information on items ranging from abortion to the Zuni of New Mexico. There is an eight-page bibliography. Recommended for large public and academic libraries. D. J. Turner Auraria Library
