摘要
摘要
A key text examining family violence and its effects on children, The Impact of Family Violence on Children and Adolescents presents various definitions of family violence, along with various theories for the origin of the problem. Authors Javad H. Kashani and Wesley D. Allan discuss different types of intrafamilial violence and the effects of each on youngsters. The book then takes up the phenomenon from a cross-cultural perspective, exploring family violence in non-Western contexts. Finally, the authors offer intervention and prevention strategies (clinical and legal) and suggest future directions for research. Examining this crucial topic from a variety of perspectives, The Impact of Family Violence on Children and Adolescents will be essential reading for those in the fields of clinical/counseling psychology, developmental psychology, nursing, behavioral psychology, social work, health services and family studies.

Written by a psychiatrist with an extensive publication record in the areas of violence and abuse, and by a student in psychology, this short book focuses on the important topic of the social, cognitive, and physical impact of violence on the lives of children and adolescents. Given their limited space, the authors have wisely chosen to focus only on "physical and verbal/psychological violence," ignoring other forms such as sexual abuse and neglect. Drawing on both extensive clinical records and empirical research, Kashani and Allan examine the impact of caregiver violence on children, children's witnessing of violence in the family, and cultural differences in these behaviors, and they offer suggestions for assessment and intervention. Their book's only drawback is that its brevity results in superficial treatment of some of the topics. This is especially apparent in the chapters on assessment and cultural differences. Despite these limitations the work is a well-written treatise on an important topic. It will serve to sensitize the clinician who works with families and to guide the researcher in this area with its extensive review of current research and careful examination of research methodology.
