PreS-Gr 2 --On a New England farm, a young girl awakens from her dream, rouses her little brother, and the two go out to join their mother in the pasture where Clover the sheep has just lambed. After the ewe and her lamb are settled in the warm barn and the rest of the family is asleep, the wakeful narrator watches hopefully from the house for more births. The first-person narrative conveys sweetness and subdued excitement with no unnecessary words. The watercolor sketches are unfinished but not incomplete; they are true to the emotion and setting of the story. A short text and a small book, but a poignant miniature to treasure. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Department of Education, Montpelier (c) Copyright 2010. A sister and her brother tiptoe out in the middle of the night to witness the birth of a new lamb. The story - full of a sense of life and the renewal of spring - captures the shivery excitement of waking during the night for a special event, and the watercolor sketches are fresh and spontaneous. Kirkus评论
In a quiet, graceful narrative, a child tells how sire and her little brother join Mom in the middle of the night during lambing time, going out to find a new lamb in the pasture and carrying it to the barn. Produced in appealing, diminutive (6""x7"") format, the book uses as illustrations the watercolor sketches that Carrick had completed before his death last year. To those familiar with Carrick's fine work, they tantalizingly suggest what the finished paintings would have been: as they stand, they have an impressionistic immediacy that sweetly evokes the special experience described in the text.
