Moving to a new town is tough for fourth-grader Barney, who has trouble keeping up in math and, worse, is tormented on his way home by Lenny Coots, a sixth-grader and a bully. Gradually Barney learns that his strict teacher really cares about him and wants to help him with the multiplication he missed in transferring; but the Lenny problem gets worse and worse. Lenny drenches Barney's scarf in the school toilet, almost runs into him with his bike, throws icy snowballs. . . until, on the last page, Barney passes up his teacher's offer of a ride home to face Lenny on the playground and speak up to him. And once confronted, Lenny wilts. It's a common situation in life and a common scenario in children's books. Without breaking out of the mold, Carrick makes readers sympathize with Barney and share his fear and anger and satisfaction. Copyright ©Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
